In place of a wildlife trip in the first half of the summer term, we are hosting an evening event at school: a 'bat walk' in the adjacent nature reserve, as well as an insect 'light show', a showcase of nocturnal footage of badgers in the reserve, and a live feed of nesting birds in our monitored nest box.
The event coincides with a talk by Bill Oddie in the Ruddock Hall at 6 pm the same evening.
Details & Timings
8:30 onwards
Reception at Outdoor Studies Hut, where the following will be available to see:
9:00
The first group will be led to Edgbaston Pool to view and hear bats hunting over the water. With the aid of bat-detectors, individual species can be heard by their different ultrasonic frequencies, and seen with the aid of a search-light over the reservoir.
9:30
The second group will be taken to Edgbaston Pool to watch and hear bats as the dusk approaches.
Booking
The cost for the event is £5 per pupil, and parents/family members of booked pupils may also attend at no extra cost. It must be stressed, however, that pupils' places must be booked beforehand.
Places can be booked as usual on the SchoolGateway system: two 'events' will be listed, and you should either book in to Group 1 (9:00 start) or Group 2 (9:30 start) as suits you best. There is a limit of 15 pupils in each group, though parents of those booked on to the event may attend on the night without notifying us beforehand. Early booking is recommended!
What to Bring
Bat detectors will be provided, though if you have one feel very free to bring it with you!
